Full Bio

Born to Row, Built to Inspire

Luca Free is the embodiment of resilience, determination, and quiet ambition — a young rower whose athletic journey reflects both the legacy he inherits and the future he is determined to build. Growing up in a family synonymous with Australian rowing greatness, Luca has been guided by the experience of his father, four-time Olympian and Beijing 2008 gold medallist Duncan Free, yet his success is entirely his own.

Beginning his rowing career at 14, Luca’s rise through the sport has been fuelled by unwavering work ethic, self-belief, and a deep connection to the Gold Coast community that shaped him. Unlike many athletes in his discipline, Luca did not progress through the traditional GPS school rowing pathway. His achievements are the product of pure drive, family mentorship, and countless hours of training outside conventional systems.

From Grassroots to Global Podiums

Luca’s breakthrough came with his selection to the Australian U19 Rowing Team for the 2024 World Championships, where he delivered an extraordinary performance to secure a bronze medal — astonishingly, while unknowingly competing with a fractured vertebra. His ability to perform at world-class level under such adversity speaks to his mental fortitude and competitive spirit.

A Pause for Strength, A Plan for Greatness

Following surgery and structured rehabilitation in 2025, Luca made the mature and strategic decision to temporarily step back from racing to prioritise long-term success. Supported by the Queensland Academy of Sport, he is rebuilding his strength in preparation for a powerful return to elite competition in the 2025/26 season. His patience, discipline, and foresight demonstrate the mindset of an athlete built for longevity.

Eyes on Brisbane 2032

Standing at 6’6” and 98kg, Luca’s physicality mirrors his ambition — to represent Australia at the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games. With the support of Grow for Gold, he is poised to continue the Free family legacy while forging his own pathway as one of the Gold Coast’s most inspiring young athletes. His story is one of courage, rebuilding, and the unwavering belief that setbacks are simply setups for greatness.
